Sweden’s post-September 13, 2026, parliamentary election has produced a narrow centre-left majority (176 seats to 173 for the right-wing bloc) but persistent coalition deadlock, keeping the probability of an automatic snap election (extraval) this year relatively contained. The Riksdag has already rejected two Speaker proposals—Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson in October and Centre Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist on November 3—leaving outgoing Moderate Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson with the third attempt and a mid-November reporting deadline. Under the Instrument of Government, a fourth rejection would trigger a snap election within three months, but parties across blocs have shown caution over the roughly 630 million SEK cost, the caretaker government’s budget deadline of November 12, and shifting post-election polling that has modestly improved the Moderates’ position. Negotiations remain hampered by cross-bloc incompatibilities, notably the Centre Party’s resistance to cooperating with the Left Party and the Sweden Democrats. With two votes failed and Kristersson’s exploratory mandate now underway, traders appear to assign higher weight to the likelihood of eventual compromise or additional rounds before the constitutional threshold is reached, rather than an immediate path to four rejections before year-end. No new parliamentary vote has been scheduled as of early November, and the caretaker administration continues routine operations pending further Speaker consultations.

Rules

This market will resolve to “Yes” if a snap election is called in Sweden between market creation and December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to “No.” The calling of a snap election requires the formal ordering of an extraordinary election, or another formal scheduling, according to the rules of the jurisdiction, of an election for all members of the Riksdag before the next scheduled ordinary Riksdag election. An extraordinary election ordered by the Government, an extraordinary election formally scheduled by the Speaker following the Riksdag's rejection of the Speaker's proposal for Prime Minister four times, and any other means provided for by the Instrument of Government all qualify. An announcement of an intention to order an extraordinary election, a failed vote on a proposed Prime Minister, or the failure of coalition negotiations will not by itself qualify toward a “Yes” resolution. The fourth rejection of a proposed Prime Minister will not qualify until the resulting extraordinary election is formally scheduled. The election need not take place by the deadline. Once a qualifying election is formally ordered or scheduled, its subsequent cancellation or postponement will not affect resolution. The resolution source for this market will be official information from the Government of Sweden and the Riksdag; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
