Republican Bob Latta, the longtime incumbent, secured the GOP nomination in the May 2026 primary and enters the November general election in Ohio’s 5th district with strong structural advantages. The district’s partisan voting index favors Republicans by double digits, consistent with Donald Trump’s 24-point margin there in 2024 and Latta’s own 35-point reelection that year. Democratic nominee Brian Shaver faces limited name recognition and fundraising in a solidly red territory that includes rural northwest Ohio and parts of the Lake Erie shoreline. Trader consensus reflected in current pricing accounts for these baseline factors plus the absence of major scandals, primary upsets, or late shifts in the race. A realistic challenge would require an unforeseen national Democratic wave, significant local economic discontent, or an incumbent-specific event that alters turnout patterns in key counties.
