U.S. gasoline prices, currently averaging $4.33 per gallon nationally as of mid-October 2026, remain elevated near seasonal records primarily due to crude oil trading near or above $100 per barrel amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and tight U.S. inventories running 7% below five-year averages. Strong refining crack spreads have sustained pump prices despite the end of peak summer driving demand, with the EIA forecasting only modest declines through year-end as supply constraints from prior hurricanes and production issues linger. Lower 48 natural gas output has also dipped to around 110.7 bcfd, indirectly supporting energy market sentiment. With just two weeks left in October, traders are monitoring any easing in crude benchmarks or inventory builds that could pressure prices lower before month-end resolution.
