Flávio Bolsonaro's recent flight to the United States after Brazil's October 2026 presidential election loss has shaped trader views on a potential 2026 asylum grant. Defying a Supreme Federal Court order to surrender passports amid ongoing money-laundering and corruption probes, the senator and family arrived in Miami on October 28 via a route through Argentina and Ecuador. The Trump administration, via State Department statements, confirmed it would issue visas allowing entry, with President Trump publicly endorsing the move and referencing perceived irregularities in Brazil's election. Allies have floated asylum claims tied to judicial actions by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, though sources note internal administration divisions and the distinction between entry visas and formal political asylum under U.S. criteria. These developments, concentrated in the past 48 hours, underpin the near-even 55% implied probability for approval this year.
This market will resolve to "Yes" if Flávio Bolsonaro is officially granted asylum in the United States between market creation and December 31, 2026, at 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No". A grant of asylum by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) or an immigration judge, or a public statement by the U.S. government confirming that Flávio Bolsonaro has been granted asylum, will qualify. Credible reporting that asylum has been granted, including confirmation by Flávio Bolsonaro or his legal representatives, will also qualify. Other forms of U.S. immigration relief or status, including but not limited to refugee status, humanitarian parole, Temporary Protected Status, withholding of removal, protection under the Convention Against Torture, visas, or lawful permanent residence, will not qualify unless an asylum grant is also made. The mere filing of an asylum application, a pending application, or Flávio Bolsonaro's presence or extended residence in the United States will not qualify. The asylum must be granted within this market's timeframe, and the grant must be confirmed by credible reporting by December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. Any subsequent revocation, appeal, or termination of asylum will not affect the resolution of this market. The resolution source will be a consensus of credible reporting.
