Russia maintains close diplomatic engagement with Iran amid the ongoing regional conflict involving the United States and Israel that began in February 2026. President Vladimir Putin met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on October 8-9 in Turkmenistan to discuss bilateral economic cooperation, the 20-year strategic partnership treaty that entered into force earlier in October, and potential Russian mediation to resolve hostilities. On October 19, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in Tehran for talks with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and a scheduled meeting with Pezeshkian, focusing on regional security, energy projects, and de-escalation efforts. These developments reflect sustained high-level contacts between the two governments as Moscow positions itself in diplomatic channels.
