Xavier Becerra’s commanding lead in the California gubernatorial market stems primarily from the June 2026 top-two primary results, where the former state attorney general and U.S. health secretary secured roughly 28 percent to advance alongside Republican Steve Hilton. California’s consistent Democratic voter registration advantage and strong historical performance by party nominees in statewide races reinforce trader consensus around the Democratic candidate. Becerra consolidated support from labor, progressive groups, and elected officials after entering the race in 2025, while multiple Democratic challengers split the remaining primary vote. With the general election set for November 3, 2026, Hilton’s path remains narrow absent major unforeseen developments such as a significant scandal, health event, or sharp national political realignment that could alter turnout or voter priorities.
