The abrupt resignation of Kimberly Guilfoyle on October 13, 2026, following reports of improper conduct, has created an immediate vacancy at the U.S. Embassy in Athens, with Deputy Chief of Mission Josh Huck assuming interim leadership. Trader sentiment remains closely divided because the White House and State Department face a months-long vetting and Senate confirmation process that could extend past the November 3 midterms, leaving open the possibility of either a political appointee with Greek-American ties or a career diplomat. Contenders such as Congressman Gus Bilirakis benefit from established relationships with President Trump and Secretary Rubio plus strong Hellenic Caucus credentials, while former ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt brings prior Greece experience, and other names including John Catsimatidis, Nicole Malliotakis, and Michael Psaros reflect competing donor and community networks. The outcome hinges on administration priorities, Senate composition after the midterms, and any late shifts in candidate interest.
