Incumbent Democrat Kristen McDonald Rivet holds a commanding position in Michigan's 8th congressional district heading into the November 2026 general election, following her unopposed primary victory on August 4 and a 51.3% win in 2024. Multiple forecasters rate the race Lean or Likely Democratic, reflecting the district's composition around the Saginaw Bay region and the incumbent's established position. Republican nominee Thomas J. Smith secured his party's primary but suspended his campaign beforehand, limiting opposition strength in the general. Trader consensus reflects these structural advantages for Democrats. A major national Republican wave, late shifts in turnout among key voting blocs, or unforeseen developments around the November 3 contest could narrow the margin, though such scenarios remain low-probability based on current indicators.
