Derek Schmidt holds a strong position as the Republican incumbent in Kansas’s 2nd congressional district, a seat rated Solid Republican by major forecasters with a partisan voter index of R+10. He defeated his primary challenger decisively in August and maintains a substantial fundraising edge, with nearly $940,000 cash on hand compared to Coover’s roughly $244,000. Schmidt has secured endorsements from key agricultural organizations and law enforcement groups while emphasizing farm policy and support for military installations such as Fort Riley. Democrat Don Coover, a West Point graduate, Army veteran, and rancher, received an endorsement from Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly in early October and has aired ads targeting Schmidt’s record on certain congressional votes. The general election occurs November 3, with the district’s consistent Republican performance in recent cycles underpinning the current trader consensus.
