Carlos Alcaraz enters his US Open first-round match against Roman Safiullin as the defending champion and second seed, returning from a four-month absence due to a right wrist injury that sidelined him since the Barcelona Open in April. The Spaniard has not contested a singles match in that span but showed encouraging movement in recent mixed doubles appearances alongside Serena Williams, reporting no major technical adjustments and strong practice sessions. Safiullin, ranked 98th, brings a potent serve and aggressive baseline game, highlighted by his 2023 straight-sets win over Alcaraz on indoor hard courts and a strong Wimbledon run that included victories over Andrey Rublev and Joao Fonseca. Their head-to-head stands at 1-1, with Alcaraz prevailing on clay at the 2024 Olympics. Trader consensus reflects Alcaraz's superior overall form and experience in best-of-five sets despite the layoff, tempered by the physical demands of a five-set opener on outdoor hard courts against a player capable of extending rallies and testing endurance.
