Elise Mertens enters the Monterrey Open semifinal as the clear favorite against 20-year-old Nikola Bartunkova, backed by her experience, higher ranking near No. 24, and strong serving in a 6-1, 6-4 quarterfinal win over Yuliia Starodubtseva with no break points faced. The Belgian has reached her first individual semifinal of the season after consistent hard-court results and a Wimbledon quarterfinal earlier in 2026. Bartunkova, ranked around No. 38 in her first full WTA campaign, advanced via three consecutive three-setters, including a 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-3 victory over compatriot Darja Vidmanova while saving nine of 11 break points. Their head-to-head stands at 1-1, split between a hard-court win for Mertens at the Australian Open and a grass win for Bartunkova in Berlin. The outdoor hard-court matchup in Monterrey, with both players managing fatigue ahead of the US Open, shapes trader views on implied probabilities.
