AfD secured the largest share of votes in the September 20, 2026, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Landtag election, more than doubling its 2021 result to 38.2 percent and edging out the SPD at 35.5 percent. This outcome aligns with the party's recent gains in eastern states and high turnout exceeding 78 percent. The CDU fell below the 5 percent threshold for the first time in postwar history, while the Left and Greens cleared it narrowly. Other parties have signaled they will not enter coalitions with the AfD, leaving government formation open despite the party's lead in seats. Final certified results or minor procedural adjustments remain the only realistic variables that could shift the recorded winner.
