Karen Khachanov enters the US Open first-round matchup against Roman Andres Burruchaga as the more experienced player with a career-high ranking of No. 8 and multiple deep Grand Slam runs, while the 24-year-old Argentine sits at No. 59 after reaching a career best of No. 56 earlier in 2026. Khachanov holds a 16-18 record in 2026 with early exits at recent hard-court Masters events in Toronto and Cincinnati, yet his serve and baseline consistency remain assets on outdoor hard courts. Burruchaga has compiled a stronger clay-court ledger and notched solid Challenger results but posted losses in hard-court stops at Montreal and Cincinnati ahead of this Flushing Meadows appearance. The hard surface and best-of-five format favor the veteran’s physicality and shot-making depth in what projects as a competitive opener.
