Lorenzo Musetti enters this US Open second-round match as the clear favorite against qualifier Dane Sweeny, reflecting the substantial gap in ranking, experience, and recent results on hard courts. The Italian 13th seed, ranked No. 14 and returning from an extended injury layoff after his Australian Open quarterfinal, dispatched Arthur Fery 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 in the first round while showing improved movement and consistency. Sweeny, at No. 123 and making his first US Open main-draw appearance away from Melbourne, advanced when Corentin Moutet retired trailing two sets to love, but the Australian has yet to defeat a top-20 player and carries a mixed record against higher-ranked opposition. Musetti’s superior baseline game, Grand Slam pedigree—including a 2025 US Open quarterfinal—and strong hard-court history underpin trader consensus, though any lingering fitness concerns from his post-Melbourne recovery could influence longer rallies on Stadium 17.
