The opposition bloc led by Social Democrats secured a narrow 176-173 seat majority in the September 2026 Riksdag election, positioning party leader Magdalena Andersson as the frontrunner to become prime minister despite her initial nomination failing in mid-October. Deep divisions within the bloc—particularly between the Left Party and Centre Party over coalition participation—have prolonged negotiations and blocked a quick resolution under Sweden's constitutional process, which allows up to four speaker proposals before triggering a snap election. Ulf Kristersson, heading the smaller Tidö bloc as caretaker prime minister, received the latest exploratory mandate through November 10 after Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist's Centre-led proposal was rejected on November 3. Trader consensus reflected in current pricing emphasizes Andersson's bloc arithmetic advantage while noting the risk of further delays or an extraordinary election if talks stall.
Parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held in Sweden on September 13, 2026. This market will resolve to the next individual who is officially appointed and assumes office as Prime Minister of Sweden following the next parliamentary election. To count for resolution, the individual must officially assume office. Any interim or caretaker Prime Minister will not count toward the resolution of this market. If no such Prime Minister assumes office by June 30, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to “Other”. The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the Government of Sweden; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.
