Elina Svitolina, the No. 9 seed and world No. 9, enters her US Open second-round match against Maya Joint with strong hard-court form after a straight-sets opening win over Solana Sierra and a solid 2026 season that includes titles in Auckland and Rome plus a Toronto semifinal run. The experienced Ukrainian has compiled an elite Grand Slam record and consistent results against higher-ranked opponents. Joint, a 20-year-old Australian ranked around No. 72-75, arrives with renewed confidence following a three-set comeback victory over Liudmila Samsonova and an earlier Wimbledon upset of Serena Williams that ended a difficult stretch. On the hard courts of Flushing Meadows, Svitolina’s depth, movement, and major-match pedigree give her the clearer edge, while Joint’s recent momentum and prior US Open progress create realistic upset potential in what shapes up as a lopsided but competitive encounter.
