Ben Shelton enters the US Open third-round matchup as the clear favorite against Denis Shapovalov, backed by his No. 9 ATP ranking, strong 2026 results including a Canadian Open title defense, and a perfect 4-0 head-to-head record. The eighth seed has advanced through two four-set battles at Flushing Meadows, overcoming early nerves against Tallon Griekspoor and battling past Hubert Hurkacz with 44 winners while drawing energy from the home crowd on Arthur Ashe. Shapovalov, ranked No. 48 with a 14-17 record this season, reached this stage via straight-sets and three-set wins but has shown inconsistency, including a Wimbledon shoulder injury retirement earlier in the year. The hard-court setting and Shelton’s powerful left-handed game further tilt the implied probabilities in the American’s favor.
