Leylah Fernandez, the 31st seed and world No. 32, faces veteran Shuai Zhang in a US Open first-round match on hard courts. Fernandez holds the ranking edge and a 1-0 head-to-head lead from their 2021 encounter, while her left-handed game and prior deep runs at Flushing Meadows provide familiarity with Grand Slam conditions. Zhang, ranked No. 53 at age 37, brings extensive experience but enters with a mixed 2026 hard-court record marked by early exits in Toronto and Cincinnati alongside sporadic wins. Both players have shown inconsistent recent form on the surface, with Fernandez tested against stronger fields and Zhang relying on variety in longer rallies. The matchup pits youth and seeding against veteran resilience in a best-of-three format.
