Elise Mertens enters as the clear favorite against Maria Timofeeva at the 2026 US Open second round on hard courts, driven by her No. 20 ranking, seeding, and greater experience at Grand Slams. The Belgian leads their head-to-head 1-0 after a three-set win at Wimbledon earlier this year. Both players advanced in straight sets in round one, with Timofeeva defeating Tamara Zidansek and Mertens overcoming Kaitlin Quevedo. Timofeeva, ranked No. 86 and fresh off a career-high ranking of 79, has shown strong recent hard-court form including two WTA 125 titles, but Mertens brings consistent results from the hard-court swing, including a Monterrey final appearance. The matchup highlights the gap in ranking and proven major-stage resilience.
