Elina Svitolina, the world No. 9 with a strong 2026 hard-court record and multiple titles, faces Solana Sierra, ranked around No. 86, in the first round of the 2026 US Open on outdoor hard courts. Svitolina advanced to the Toronto semifinals before withdrawing from Cincinnati with a right ankle injury but showed competitive form in mixed doubles alongside husband Gael Monfils, reaching the semifinals before a loss on August 26. Sierra has posted mixed recent results on hard courts, including early exits in Toronto and Cincinnati qualifying, though she reached the third round at the 2026 French Open. The significant ranking and experience gap positions the veteran as the clear favorite in this Grand Slam opener, with Sierra needing a strong upset to advance.
