Clara Tauson enters as the clear favorite in this US Open first-round matchup against wildcard Sloane Stephens, driven by her higher ranking near No. 38-42 and stronger recent hard-court results compared to Stephens’ No. 208-209 standing. Tauson holds a 16-20 record in 2026 with solid wins over players like Ekaterina Alexandrova, though she exited early in Monterrey; Stephens, a 2017 champion at Flushing Meadows, has shown flashes in qualifying and early rounds but carries a mixed 15-17 mark with recent losses to higher-ranked opponents. Their first career meeting favors Tauson’s current form and baseline consistency on hard courts, while Stephens’ Grand Slam experience and home support represent the primary upset pathway in what projects as a competitive opener.
