Maria Sakkari holds a 3-1 head-to-head edge over Yulia Putintseva, including recent wins on varied surfaces, and enters the Tokyo first-round match as the higher-ranked player at No. 30 after quarterfinal runs in Singapore and Wuhan that restored her to the top 30. Sakkari’s consistent hard-court results in the Asian swing contrast with Putintseva’s No. 66 ranking and limited main-draw success since July, despite the Kazakh qualifying for the WTA 500 event. Outdoor hard courts favor Sakkari’s experience in this matchup, though Putintseva’s return game has kept prior encounters competitive. The current trader consensus reflects these form and ranking gaps while acknowledging the potential for tight sets on this surface.
