Marta Kostyuk enters the 2026 US Open first-round matchup against Storm Hunter as the clear favorite, backed by her world No. 11 ranking and consistent hard-court form that includes quarterfinal runs in Toronto and Cincinnati. The 24-year-old Ukrainian has secured eight top-10 wins this season, reached semifinals at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, and posted a 32-8 record overall. Hunter, ranked No. 169 and coming off a grueling qualifying campaign that included victories over higher-seeded players, brings experience as a left-hander but faces a steep gap in recent results and Grand Slam pedigree on outdoor hard courts. Surface trends and head-to-head history further favor the higher-ranked player in this opening-round encounter.
