Sonay Kartal enters the Japan Women's Open third round on hard courts with surging momentum from an unexpected run to the Wuhan Open final, where the British player defeated top-10 opponents including Elina Svitolina and Jelena Ostapenko shortly after returning from a six-month back injury layoff that had dropped her ranking to No. 170. Kartal leads the head-to-head 3-1, including a straight-sets hard-court win over Birrell in Doha earlier in 2026. The Australian, currently ranked around No. 40, has shown solid recent results such as a Seoul final appearance but lacks comparable late-season form or recent victories against elite competition. Both players favor hard courts, yet Kartal's current confidence and match sharpness represent the dominant factor shaping trader expectations.
