Taylor Townsend enters the US Open first-round matchup against Maja Chwalinska as the consensus favorite due to her stronger hard-court results this season and greater experience at the Grand Slam level. The left-handed American holds a 13-7 hard record in 2026, including third-round showings in Toronto and Cincinnati, while leveraging her elite doubles skills for net play and variety. Chwalinska, ranked No. 22 after a strong clay campaign that included a deep French Open run, sits at 4-5 on hard this year and has dropped her last two main-draw matches on the surface. No prior head-to-head exists, and both players arrive without reported injuries ahead of the outdoor hard-court contest on Grandstand. Market pricing reflects Townsend’s edge in pace, serve effectiveness, and situational familiarity.
