The San Diego Padres (67-59) enter the August 18 matchup at Citi Field as the more competitive side, sitting second in the NL West and battling for the final National League wild-card spot, while the New York Mets (57-69) remain fifth in the NL East and eliminated from postseason contention. The Padres arrive off a narrow 2-1 series-opening loss in which their offense managed just seven singles against strong Mets defense, though they have won 14 of their prior 18 games. Left-hander Robbie Ray takes the mound for San Diego seeking his first win since a midseason trade, opposite Mets lefty Zac Thornton, who has limited opponents to three earned runs or fewer in seven of his last eight starts. Multiple roster absences, including Padres starters on the injured list and Mets contributors such as Juan Soto (calf) and Mark Vientos (hand), shape available lineups, while the Mets’ recent four-game home winning streak and 7-3 mark over their last 10 games reflect improved form at Citi Field.
