The Yankees (81-61) enter Sunday’s series finale at Petco Park with the stronger recent form, holding a 6-4 mark over their last 10 games and leading MLB in team ERA at 3.21 while sitting comfortably in the AL wild-card race. Probable starters Gerrit Cole (8-7, 3.29 ERA) and Michael King (9-9, 3.11 ERA) both bring sub-3.30 marks, though New York’s road success (44-30) and depth in the bullpen give traders a slight edge in implied probability. The Padres (74-68) remain in a tight NL wild-card battle but have dropped six of eight, with key absences including multiple 60-day IL arms and position players. Yankees injuries to Aaron Judge (rib) and Giancarlo Stanton further thin the lineup, yet Ben Rice’s power surge and Cody Bellinger’s recent contributions offset some losses. Playoff positioning and the rubber-game stakes keep both sides competitive.
