Botic van de Zandschulp faces Luciano Darderi for the first time in the Winston-Salem Open round of 16 on outdoor hard courts, a matchup shaped by contrasting recent trajectories and tournament familiarity. Van de Zandschulp, ranked No. 71, arrives with strong local momentum after a dominant 6-2, 6-0 win over Adolfo Daniel Vallejo and prior deep runs here, including last year’s final. Darderi, the No. 22 seed and higher-ranked player with a career-high No. 16, advanced in three sets against countryman Mattia Bellucci but has shown mixed hard-court results this summer after a strong clay season featuring multiple titles. Both players enter with solid but not dominant 2026 win rates on the surface, leaving the outcome dependent on serve efficiency, return pressure, and handling of break-point opportunities in what projects as a competitive contest.
