Colton Smith, the 23-year-old American ranked No. 221, faces No. 129 Andrea Pellegrino in the first round of US Open qualifying on outdoor hard courts. Pellegrino, seeded 22nd in the draw and a 29-year-old Italian with a career-high ranking of 109 earlier in 2026, enters with stronger overall pedigree despite a 37% win rate on hard courts. Smith, whose career best reached No. 133 in 2025, holds recent hard-court experience from Challenger events and benefits from home-crowd support plus a schedule that included Wimbledon qualifying. No prior head-to-head exists between the players. The best-of-three-set format on a surface where Pellegrino has historically struggled gives the lower-ranked American realistic upset potential in this opener.
