Tomas Machac holds the edge in this US Open first-round matchup on outdoor hard courts due to his greater main-tour and Grand Slam experience despite a 14-12 record in 2026 and recent losses that have dropped him to No. 58 from a career-high of No. 20. The Czech has reached the fourth round at Flushing Meadows in prior years and brings proven hard-court results against higher-level opponents. Toby Samuel, a 23-year-old qualifier ranked No. 110 making his main-draw debut after strong Challenger form and successful qualifying wins, faces a significant step up in competition with limited ATP wins to date. Their first head-to-head pits Samuel’s recent momentum and serve against Machac’s baseline consistency and physical edge in a contest where the wisdom of crowds in related markets reflects the experience gap while acknowledging Samuel’s upset potential on the day.
