Rei Sakamoto, the 20-year-old Japanese player ranked No. 157, faces 29-year-old Frenchman Alexandre Muller (No. 138) in US Open qualifying round two on outdoor hard courts. Sakamoto advanced from his opening qualifier match by defeating Jay Clarke in three sets, extending a solid recent hard-court record that includes multiple challenger wins this summer. Muller also progressed comfortably, routing Laslo Djere 7-5, 6-0, but arrives with weaker overall form, posting just three wins in his prior 10 matches across clay and hard surfaces. Their head-to-head stands at 1-1, split by surface, while the younger Sakamoto holds a modest edge in recent second-serve and return metrics on hard. Both players enter on short rest in a best-of-three format where the winner advances to the final qualifying round.
