Daniil Medvedev enters the 2026 US Open first round on outdoor hard courts after a challenging hard-court stretch that includes early exits in Montreal and Cincinnati plus a second-round loss in Winston-Salem, leaving him with just one win in his last five matches. The No. 7 seed and former champion still carries a strong overall hard-court record and leads the head-to-head 1-0 against Gaston from their 2021 indoor meeting. Hugo Gaston, ranked near No. 88-91, arrives via three qualifying wins, including a comeback victory, and sits on a modest recent streak, though he has limited main-draw success at Flushing Meadows. Medvedev’s superior ranking, serve, and experience on the surface shape the primary context, while Gaston’s left-handed variety and qualifier momentum represent the main variables in this opening-round matchup.
