Learner Tien enters the US Open first-round matchup against Nuno Borges as the clear favorite, holding the No. 15 ATP ranking to Borges’ No. 41 and leading their head-to-head 2-0 in straight sets, including a third-round win at the 2026 Australian Open on hard courts. The 20-year-old American has shown strong baseline consistency and return game on hard this season despite recent Masters 1000 exits, while the 29-year-old Portuguese reached the Cincinnati fourth round with notable wins over higher-ranked opponents. Both players arrive with recent hard-court experience from the North American swing, though Tien’s higher ranking, younger athletic profile, and superior recent win rate against quality opposition shape the current trader consensus on the hard-court Grand Slam encounter.
