Matteo Arnaldi enters the US Open first-round matchup against James Duckworth as the higher-ranked player at No. 34, fresh off a career-best Roland Garros semifinal run earlier in 2026 despite a subsequent withdrawal due to illness. Arnaldi has posted mixed hard-court results this summer, including a win over Fabian Marozsan in Montreal before straight-sets losses to Tallon Griekspoon and Martin Landaluce in the Canadian and Cincinnati Masters events. Duckworth, ranked No. 79 at age 34, arrives with strong recent momentum after advancing to the Winston-Salem semifinals on outdoor hard courts, where he defeated higher-seeded opponents including Lorenzo Sonego and Marozsan before retiring in the final four. The Australian veteran holds an edge in recent hard-court win rate and service efficiency, though Arnaldi’s superior ranking, return game, and prior Grand Slam depth create a clear favorite-underdog dynamic on the faster New York hard courts. No prior head-to-head exists, and both players’ recent schedules leave limited rest heading into Flushing Meadows.
