China’s leadership continues to prioritize gray-zone coercion, maritime patrols, and blockade rehearsals over amphibious assault preparations, while internal military purges have further eroded command readiness for a complex cross-strait operation. U.S. and Taiwanese investments in asymmetric defenses, missiles, and drones have widened capability gaps that analysts assess China cannot close before year-end, aligning with historical patterns where Beijing has avoided high-risk kinetic action absent clear provocation or assured success. Trader consensus at 96.3 percent for no invasion by December 2026 reflects this sustained deterrence posture and absence of mobilization signals. A sudden Taiwanese independence declaration, abrupt U.S. policy reversal, or major miscalculation could still shift the timeline, though such triggers remain improbable in the remaining months.
