The Democratic primary for Providence mayor, set for September 9, 2026, features a tight contest between incumbent Brett Smiley and state Representative David Morales, with trader odds reflecting their narrow polling gap and competing strengths. Smiley benefits from his record on housing production, public safety, and city operations since taking office in 2023, while Morales has gained ground through endorsements from progressive figures and unions, plus criticism of Smiley’s veto of a 4% rent stabilization ordinance. Forums and debates through August have sharpened divides on affordability, environmental justice near the port, and budget priorities, but early voting and the low-turnout environment keep outcomes uncertain. Further developments in the final weeks, including additional polling or shifts in council support, could widen the margin before primary results resolve the nomination.
