Rublev enters as the consensus favorite in this US Open second-round matchup on hard courts, reflecting his higher ranking, Grand Slam experience, and historical success reaching at least the fourth round in New York in recent years. The 28-year-old Russian rallied from two sets down in a grueling five-set first-round win over Otto Virtanen, saving a match point before prevailing in a deciding tiebreak after nearly four hours on court. Merida Aguilar, the 21-year-old Spaniard at a career-high ranking near No. 39, brings strong momentum with a straight-sets first-round victory over Marton Fucsovics and recent hard-court results including a Masters quarterfinal in Montreal and an ATP title in Umag. The pair has no prior head-to-head, leaving questions about how Merida's aggressive baseline game and recent form will test Rublev's recovery and serve consistency in the best-of-five format.
