Nikola Bartunkova enters the US Open second-round matchup as the clear favorite, backed by her world ranking of 34 and strong recent hard-court results, including a straight-sets first-round win over Mayar Sherif. The 20-year-old Czech has shown consistent form this season with multiple deep runs on the surface. Tatjana Maria, the 39-year-old German ranked 83, arrives with momentum after a resilient comeback victory over 30th seed Jelena Ostapenko in the opening round, overcoming rain delays and 59 unforced errors from her opponent with her trademark slice-heavy style. Head-to-head history is limited, but Bartunkova’s youth, power baseline game, and higher ranking position her ahead in trader consensus, while Maria’s experience and recent upset potential keep the contest from being entirely one-sided on the hard courts at Flushing Meadows.
