Alex Michelsen and Daniel Merida Aguilar enter their US Open third-round clash ranked within seven spots of each other on hard courts, with a 1-1 head-to-head split from 2026 encounters in Indian Wells and Montreal. Michelsen, the American, reached this stage for the first time by upsetting No. 16 Brandon Nakashima in straight sets after a dominant opener, while the 21-year-old Spaniard has surged from outside the top 400 to a career-high No. 39 after claiming an ATP title in Umag and defeating No. 23 Andrey Rublev from a set down. Both players carry recent momentum on the surface, with Merida’s rapid ranking climb and experience against higher seeds adding uncertainty to the matchup.
