Daniil Medvedev, the No. 7 seed and 2021 US Open champion, faces American wildcard Sebastian Gorzny in the second round on hard courts at Flushing Meadows. Medvedev opened with a controlled straight-sets win over qualifier Hugo Gaston (6-4, 6-2, 6-4), showing improved focus after a mixed hard-court swing that included early exits in Cincinnati and Winston-Salem. The 30-year-old Russian ranks far ahead in experience, power, and consistency on this surface. Gorzny, a 22-year-old University of Texas product ranked No. 731, earned his main-draw spot via wildcard and survived a five-set first-round battle against Raphael Collignon, saving multiple match points. His limited ATP-level exposure and recent college-to-pro transition mark a steep step up in class against a former world No. 1 and multiple-time major finalist. No notable injuries or withdrawals affect either player, and the hard-court conditions align with Medvedev’s strengths. Market pricing reflects the wide gap in pedigree and recent form.
